Beer drinking can prevent hypertension

MADRID: Beer, with or without alcohol, can prevent high blood pressure if consumed moderately, as part of a balanced diet, according to Spanish researchers who defended the good properties of the millenarian beverage.
The research, carried out by the Association of the Spanish Society of Hypertension-Spanish League to Fight Arterial Hypertension and the Beer and Health Information Center, showed that beer’s low content of sodium and high content of potassium are positive for health.
“By moderate consumption we mean 1-2 glasses of beer a day for women and 2-3 glasses for men”, said Jose Antonio Garcia, one of scientists who carried out the research, published in La Opinión de Canarias.
The study, entitled “Moderate Consumption of Beer in Patients with Arterial Hypertension” links consumption of the beverage with the Mediterranean diet, which includes drinking fermented beverages such as wine moderately.
The bioactive elements of beer benefit the antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, estrogenic and antiviral action, says the research, which also found a relationship between moderate consumption and an increase in HDL-c (good cholesterol), especially in women.
